  • Phoenix BIOS E686 4000C
  • 3 Volt CMOS-Batterie
  • CPU AMD Geode NX1500 (although BIOS says "AMD Athlon 1000 MHz" at startup)
  • RAM: 2.5V DDR 333 SO-DIMM CL2.5
    • default: 256 MB
    • 512 MB works aswell
    • I tried 1 GB, but it doesn't work: one long error beep on startup, no video, not booting
    • according to visitor feedback, 1 GB apparently works after applying the latest BIOS update (see below)
  • IDE0: Compact Flash Socket, 8 GB CF works
  • IDE1: Standard 40-pin Parallel ATA Socket

  • currently trying to use a CF-SD-Adapter, in order to use a 32GB SD card as primary IDE master
  • BIOS detects primary IDE as "none", trying a BIOS update
  • updated 4.00.0C to 4.00.0Q, but that didn't help

BIOS upgrade

  • download BIOS upgrade from
  • you get a ZIP file with a WinImage self-extracting Windows executable, which only extracts to a floppy: FutroS400_4000Q.exe
  • extract using unzip and 7zip:
unzip FTS_FlashBIOSUpdateCompressedFlashFiles_4000Q_1028017.ZIP
7za x FutroS400_4000Q.exe
  • creates Futro S400 (AMD NX)4000Q.IMA, which is a bootable disk image with the AWDFLASH utility
  • flash it onto an empty USB stick (as root):
dd if=AWDFLASH_AMD_NX_4000Q.iso of=/dev/sdX
  • attach USB stick to your Futro, switch it on, boot from USB stick and press Alt+F3 for AWDFLASH to initiate upgrade, takes about 1 minute to complete
