Although the exact pathway(s) for autoxidation of plant
triglycerides to yield high polymers is uncertain, there
seems wide agreement that the formation of intermediate
hydroperoxides and their decomposition to yield free
radicals are integral to the mechanism (Wexler, 1964)
Dissolved  copper does not appear to catalyze the decomposition of
intermediate hydroperoxides since it has no discernible
effect when a peroxide initiator replaces oxygen.
It appears that the catalytic role of copper in the
present system may involve direct interaction with oxygen
to yield peroxy and other free radicals as indicated in eq 3 and 4.
